Skydiving yesterday was absolutely AMAZING! Tandem is the way to go – no freefall for about the first 4 static line jumps – and Nikki and I paid the extra $25 to jump from a higher altitude. We jumped out of a perfectly good airplane at 13,000 feet with somebody strapped to our back! We got to do 7,000 feet of freefall before the parachute was deployed, and it jerks good when it goes! We were packed in the airplane like sardines – 4 tandem “students” and 4 “instructors”, and 4 licensed crazies. It was a blast to watch them jump, they were so stoked (good to see, since we were next!). One of those guys went out backwards, and two went out holding hands. Awesome stuff.
I was the last tandem pair out of the plane, and my only moment once we took off the runway of “oh shit, what am I doing?!” lasted half a second with my feet hanging out the plane door, and then we were OUT! From that high up, it hardly even seemed real, even after we jumped. The ground was so far away there was no feeling of rushing toward the ground, even though the website says that during freefall we go as fast as 130mph toward the ground! The instructors do tell you to smile when you jump, and for good reason – if you stop grinning, your cheeks start flapping in the wind! It was a little scary at first, but so much fun. When the parachute opened (I’m told they pull it at 5,000 feet and it’s fully deployed at 4,000) it jerked good on the harness, but then it was a total blast. My instructor showed me how to steer and control speed, and there wasn’t really any feeling of falling, even though I could see the ground getting closer at that point. There aren’t enough words to describe how awesome it was and how good the rush felt …I think I froze my sinuses trying to breathe up there, though.
The adrenaline rush is indescribable. And addicting. My legs were kind of shaky after we landed, but WOW… Nothing like cheating death to make you feel alive!
With so many people going tandem that day – we were the third load up for the 3 o’clock “class – it kept making me think of that scene in Finding Nemo when they’re exiting the current by Australia… “Do you have your exit buddy?”
One of the licensed guys jumping solo on my flight had such an awesome t-shirt that I had to get a picture…
So, who is up for round two in the Spring??
