My boss got taken out of the game and put on medical leave suddenly last Thursday, which left us scrambling to cover shifts and waiting to see what was going to happen. The two options were for the district manager to bring in a more senior “first assistant” (my current position) to act as store manager until my boss is back, or to move me up to store manager, the current second assistant up to first assistant, and the more senior manager trainee up to second assistant manager for the duration. I had mixed feelings about getting moved up to store manager… It’s not a great increase in pay, it’s more hours (45 instead of my current 42.5), and it’s more responsibility and stress, with the store’s annual inventory next week. The alternative is that we didn’t know who they might bring in, and the team we’ve got right now works really well together. We didn’t need somebody brought in that would constantly be on a power trip like my first boss with the company.
I found out today that I’m getting moved up until at least mid-May, when my boss is supposed to be off medical leave, and then I’ll likely be bumped back up while she’s on maternity leave. So I’m looking at three to five months as store manager. I’m still kind of nervous about it – usually people are first assistants for a couple years before they get moved up, and I’ve only been a first for a little over a year. At least this will look good on a job application… rapid promotion.
Wish me luck, I think I’m going to need it…
On a side note, I almost got a great picture of a squirrel today hanging off our suet feeder, but twice the little bugger fell off before I could get my camera ready. At least I got a cool photo of him drinking out of the bird bath!
