I finally got the amigurumi owl completed that I’d been working on. I’d gotten most of it done, and then realized that for amigurumi that rather than crocheting through the back loop of the row before, you were supposed to crochet through both loops in order to make a tighter crochet. The shape of Owl 2.0 came out much more how it was supposed to. I used a free pattern from Lion brand yarns, the Graduation Owl, but instead of crocheting a graduation cap, I gave him a second ear. I also crocheted him in two shades of earthy green as the primary colors since he’s a Christmas present for Anna, and that’s one of her favorite colors. It seemed to have something lacking, and was rather drab (rather olive drab to be more specific) so I knitted a red scarf for the owl. (Size “H-8” crochet hook, Lion Brand “Vanna’s Choice” Yarn in Olive, Dusty Green, Linen, and Mustard)
I’ve also found a cute pattern for a variation of the Granny Square, created at nadelspiel.com called the “Somalia African Flower”. I’ve been playing with it with basic worsted weight “Red Heart Super Saver” yarn (primarily because of the wide variety of colors available) and finally got a 3.5 mm hook to get me the size I wanted. Oddly, the “I-9” 5.5mm hook that crochets it larger causes it to curl more than a smaller hook and thus a tighter crochet. I’m not sure why that is, but it looks a lot better with a smaller crochet too. I’d like to do different colors of flowers… to have it look like forget-me-nots, daisies, black-eyed susans, etc. I need to get a crochet hook with a much larger handle though, as my hand is cramped up from using the teeny hook.
Monkey’s been enjoying the Christmas season in the form of the empty boxes from stuff I’ve ordered online and from the presents my dad shipped. She’s thrilled with empty boxes to hide and play in. With the exception of trying to chew on the lower branches and the electrical cord for the Christmas lights, she’s left the fake tree alone and seems to enjoy sleeping under the tree on the felt Christmas tree skirt.
