I’ve come to the decision that my laptop (purchased in November of 2008) is likely on its last legs. It’s behaving funny at times, and the battery is completely shot – as in will no longer hold ANY charge, so I’ve basically got the mobility of a desktop with the weight of a laptop. I’m also not willing to spend $150 on a new battery for a laptop over four years old.
I’ve also decided that I don’t want another laptop. My cell phone can take the place of much of what I do on my laptop, especially for travel (checking email, checking facebook, etc), so I don’t really need the mobility of a laptop any longer. Also, my experience shows desktop computers to be more reliable, more upgradable (without costing an arm and a leg), and they typically have more storage than laptops. The higher end laptops I’ve found online are only available with up to 1TB hard drive storage, whereas I’m looking at a 3TB hard drive for a desktop… and that’s just because the price difference between the 3TB and the 4TB is enough that I could nearly buy two 3TB drives for the cost of one 4TB drive.
After deciding on a desktop, I debated between buying one pre-built (such as Dell, etc) or building one myself. I’ve done the DIY desktop before, which went well, and my old one still works… It just isn’t fast enough or have enough storage to put up with it for everyday use – it was built in 2006. I’ve been pricing out parts for building one, which has nearly made me cross-eyed because I only half understand most of it (if that!) and played on the Dell website as well. The verdict? For cost vs. what I’ll get, I’m building it. I committed today… there was a sale going on the processor I want that ends today, so I ordered it. Now to figure out a graphics card, power supply (it’s gotta be modular!), and some of the other stuff. Each part will come with a manufacturer warranty, and since we all know how very helpful tech support can be over the phone, I’m not overly concerned with losing that aspect of buying a pre-built desktop. If nothing else, I can always call my brother in Orlando!
I’ll post pics and updates once I actually have more parts ordered and start assembling stuff, since I don’t really have anything else to post about. My dad wants pictures of “the build”, which is actually pretty boring to see photos of computer guts, but to each their own, and since I’ll have photos for him, I’m sure they’ll end up on here!
Update: Holy cow, huge dilemma! Do I go with the unobtrusive, grown-up case, or the holy cow fun but neither grown-up or unobtrusive case??
