Yesterday was gorgeous, sunny and warm, so I got to play in the garden for a while. I finally finished planting most of the new plants I bought back in mid-April. I’m still trying to figure out where to plant a rather spindly-looking one that could get up to 8 feet tall. I also relocated my geraniums (in individual pots) to in front of the well house, to try to throw a splash of color there. I sprinkled some flower seeds in my front gardens as well, which will look nice if they grow.
Unfortunately, I ended up out in the sun for longer than I’d planned, even though it was just a couple hours, and now my back, shoulders, and right arm are pretty burnt. I’ve got aloe on it already, and hopefully it heals quickly!
A while back, I had planted some seedlings and seeds in my raised beds, but a lot of the seeds never came up… or birds got them as soon as they did come up. And after the work of getting the raised beds made, I’m sure not going to let them sit half empty all summer. So, I cheated 😛
Yesterday afternoon we headed out to Gordon’s Garden Center in Yelm to buy some vegetable starts to replace the seeds I planted that never grew. I went a bit nuts picking out herbs and veggies, but now my raised beds actually look like a garden! I ended up altering my plans a little for the what-goes-where as I couldn’t find starts for a couple plants I had planned on growing.
Hopefully I can figure out what went wrong, so I can grow from seed next year!
Since I’m working mornings now instead of evenings, it will be easier to water my garden regularly. It’s better for the plants to water them after the sun is off of them, rather than in the morning, so that ought to work out well… if I can remember to water it! I also planted some cut-up potato bits in big pots (they send runners out, so they can get rather out of control in the ground). It will be interesting to see if those grow at all. They’ve got little green starts on them, but I left them out of the dirt a lot longer than the suggested time frame after quartering them up. I ended up with potato starts by forgetting about the leftover potatoes in the pantry from the bag I bought for Christmas dinner…
