A couple bits to start: I am aware that the Chromebook comes in several sizes and models, and I’m looking more at their mid-size model, with the 11.6″ display. I also already own the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet.
I thought I would love having a tablet, that it was my solution to all non-desktop needs. I could (and did) buy a small bluetooth keyboard to go with it, since swype typing on a large screen is kind of a pain. Even streaming Netflix, it has a decent battery life. I’m sure there are all sorts of app features that I haven’t discovered yet. The screen size is great for movies and viewing pictures and websites.
But typing on it, even with the small keyboard, leaves a bit to be desired. To use the keyboard easily, the tablet has to be propped up on a desk, rather than being able to lounge on the couch. I avoid emailing and blogging on it, simply because it is a nuisance to try to do those two things on it.
So I’m wondering if a Chromebook could be a solution. I’ve had laptops for years, even when I’ve previously owned desktops at the same time. My current desktop is my preferred machine, since I built it up so much that it’s got a wicked amount of storage, and is very fast for what I use it for, so all I really need to be able to do on a portable device is email, blog, web browse, and Netflix. I like that I should be able to get photos directly from my camera to the Chromebook (there is an SD card slot) to upload, and that it’s got an attached keyboard… that I can use on my lap instead of at a desk. Currently, I have to use my desktop to get my photos from my camera to my blog, even if I’ve gotten the rest of the blog post ready on the tablet. The Chromebooks also have a pretty decent price point.
However, I don’t have any experience with the Chrome OS, and I’m wondering if there are some simple solutions to the dilemmas with my tablet that I’ve overlooked, or some features that make the tablets wonderful that I haven’t discovered yet before I give up on it. I can’t see buying the Chromebook and keeping the tablet as well.
I know it sounds like I’m already pretty well decided, but I’m open to options and suggestions. Does anybody have any input on the tablet versus the Chromebook, or features/apps of my tablet I ought to investigate that I haven’t discovered yet? Ideas or advice is welcome and asked for!
