Out running errands after work today, I decided to pop into the pet store to drool over the kittens. Impulse control was evidently non-existent, and now I’ve got a fish for the first time in years. A male Crowntail Betta, sometimes also know as a Siamese Fighting Fish. I think his name is going to be Spike, since his fins are so spiky.
I also got an algae ball to go with it, called a Marimo. It looks cool, and will supposedly help keep algae low in the tank because it competes for the same resources as algae, and does a better job of using up those resources so other tank algae can’t. The info sheet at the pet store said they are also sometimes called Tribbles… I’m definitely not a Trekkie (Deep Space 9 gave me nightmares when I was little) but I thought it was funny and it may or may not have had some influence in my decision to buy one.
So far the cats haven’t tried to eat him, but I’ve only been home for about three hours. I’ll have to keep a lid on it, since Mia just tried to drink the bowl water. I’m not sure the water treatment that’s good for the fish is good for Mia’s tummy… He’s living in a one gallon jar for now, but I’d like to find a small filtered and heated tank… then I can have some African Dwarf Frogs again too! 🙂 I’ve had them coexist peacefully with Bettas before.
Mia is protesting the coming of winter… my desk lamp is halogen and puts off a noticeable amount of heat, so she enjoys sunning herself under it when I’m at my desk. It’s a fake-n-bake Fluffin!
