So far, these are the colors I bought for the Yarnspirations Crochet Along (CAL). It’s very much like a color scheme listed on the Yarnspirations website, except I replaced the “A” color of “bone” with “soft gray heather.” I’m very excited about this CAL, and seeing the different photos people post of their afghans in progress – evidently at one point there was so much site traffic to sign up for the CAL that the site crashed! I didn’t sign up for the knit-along (KAL) that the site is running at the same time, but I plan to keep track of the “clues” for it as well for a later date.
I was glad that I had checked my gauge before I started. I’ve been trying to be better about this, especially since I tend to crochet rather tightly (a habit picked up from making amigurumis, unfortunately). However, I had a bit of an issue with a gauge swatch that wasn’t making sense at the time – I had to go up two hook sizes to get my gauge swatch to be four inches square instead of three, but then when I started my granny squares, it didn’t match up! My gauge swatch said go up two hook sizes – “J/10 (6.0mm)” instead of “H/8 (5.0mm)”. After I got six squares into the first clue, I finally noticed on the directions that the first clue stated each granny square should be about 4 inches square. Mine measured 5″ square…. a recheck with the H hook, and then my size 7 hook (4.5mm) working in pattern had my squares the proper size according to the first clue, so I frogged the six squares I’d finished and started over.
The extremely frustrating part came next. On Friday, as I was finishing sewing in loose ends on the last of my 20 squares, I see online that they announced there was an error in the first clue. Each finished granny square should actually be five inches square, not four. While it’s doable to frog a square and make it smaller after the ends have been cut, there’s just not enough yarn there to frog a square and make it bigger. Since this clue took a few days and more than an entire skein of yarn, I’m hesitant to chuck it all in the trash and start over to make 5 inch granny squares. It’s very disappointing that with a CAL this big, they didn’t proof read their clues before posting them. I’m hoping now that my blanket doesn’t come out too ridiculously small. At least this explains the confusion with my gauge swatch versus the granny square size, and tells me that I’d done my gauge swatch properly in the first place.
When the second clue comes out tomorrow, though, I am very tempted to go pick up another skein or two of my gray yarn and swap everything up to the proper size – back to my “J” hook. Because I lose an inch with each square otherwise, that square size could make quite a difference in the finished blanket size. ARGH. At least if I save my 4″ squares, and mark them with the yarn brand and hook size, I could always use them for something else later.
The PDF for the first clue is available through the Yarnspirations website here. If this link no longer works, please email me, I will likely have it saved!
